Resilience theories describe principles of fexible strength and endurance. Through this interactive session we
explore strategies to bring this theory alive in our leadership roles. Application of resilience theory has potential to
build leaders who can withstand strain, weather the storms, hold up over time and approach their role with vision,
skill, and compassion.
Participants will:
• Review several resilience theories derived from psychology, social work, engineering and biology
• Discuss supports that aid resilience
• Explore barriers that hinder resilience
• Understand mindset and emotional regulation strategies linked with resilience through crisis
• Develop a personal plan of action

HOW TO STOP PUTTING OUT FIRES AND START MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Presented by: Jefrey L. Buller, Director, Leadership and Professional Development, Florida Atlantic University,
Jupiter, FL

A highly interactive workshop that provides participants with clear, practical ideas about how they can help their
programs become more positive, visionary, and forward-looking. An emphasis will be made on strategies that can
be put into efect immediately but that have lasting results. Participants are also likely to emerge with this work-
shop with a new, more optimistic attitude about their chances of making a positive diference at their institutions.

Participants will:
• Understand what positive academic leadership is and is not
• Master the three basic strategies of positive academic leadership
• Develop new ways of viewing their colleagues that can lead to greater mutual understanding
• Realize why traditional books on management do not relate well to an academic setting
• Create their own plan for incorporating positive academic leadership into their work
