THE POWER OF HOPE

Hope is the belief that the tomorrow will be better than today and that you have the power to make that so. Shane
Lopez, in his book Making Hope Happen: Create the Future you want for Yourself and Others shares his meta-
analyses of hope research and concludes that, with other conditions being equal, hope leads to a 12% gain in
academic performance, 14% gain in workplace outcomes and a 10% gain in happiness.

This activity based session will help you explore how you can increase hope in your life and in the life of your stu-
dents and those you lead. During this session participants, will have the opportunity to share “best practices” in a
whole new light, the light of developing hope in others.

Scott Geddis is a leader, educator, speaker, mentor and coach who inspires others to fnd the best in themselves
and apply that knowledge to inspire others. Scott encourages others to understand that authentic compassionate
leadership and teaching builds trust, hope, compassion and stability in both followers and students.

This session will:
• Review the defnition and impact of Hope in both teaching and leadership.
• Discuss the three core competencies of hope; goals, agency and pathways.
• Measure participant’s hope score, readiness for hope score and hope contagion score.
• Create an opportunity for participants to share best practices leaders and educators can use to increase the
hope of their students and those they lead.

A strategic goal to increase graduation set Chippewa Valley Technical College on a journey to redesign
developmental education. Our goal was to accelerate student progress through developmental coursework to
help students advance into and through academic programs faster. The cross functional team developed guiding
principles which paved the way to transform math, writing and program admission standards within one academic
year. What does it take to convert 22 math courses into four math pathways? Join this session to fnd out. Learn
how transformational leadership guided CVTC’s change to improve access.

Learning objectives:
• Gain knowledge of a four math pathway design at CVTC
• Analyze CVTC’s approach to transform program admission standards
• Examine the transformational leadership principles used in this institutional change
• Investigate if this approach can be replicated at your college
