WHY ARE YOU SENDING ALL OF MY INFORMATION TO THE POLICE?
Location: Boca V TECHNOLOGY
Presented by: Bruce Seger, Professor, Sufolk Community College, Brentwood, NY
Voice recognition/interactive devices and virtual reality ware are just a few of the latest technologies linked to the
cyber world. Items, such as, the Amazon Echo and Google Home are smart speakers that respond to voice
recognition and commands. They are the frst in a growing collection of smart speakers that can control other smart
devices by serving as an automation hub. The negative is that they also have the ability to record all information
within range of their speakers and send that information to the cloud. Such information can then potentially be
obtained by governmental agencies, as well as, private companies without prior authorization or justifcation.
Leaders of Academic Institutions must be cognizant of these technologies and how they can impact learning,
interaction with others and privacy. Through knowledge of these devices, academic leaders can create policies
and be aware of ever changing cyber-laws and regulations that may impact students, faculty and the entire college
community regarding individual and academic freedoms.
The attendees will beneft by:
• Examining the features of these devices and issues created.
• Exploring the current laws and regulations regarding cyber-privacy.
• Recognizing how these technologies can beneft rights and simultaneously impinge upon freedoms.
• Learning how to fashion potential policies to address the many high tech questions created by new
technologies.
