Presented by: Roger J. Stanford, Vice President of Academic Afairs, Western Technical College, La Crosse, WI,
Jacqueline Kettner-Sieber, Human Resources Specialist, Western Technical College, La Crosse, WI
Academic learning teams are used to increase engagement with faculty. Learning teams are intentional groups that
meet to explore, research, discuss, and make recommendations for academic and college improvement. Learn-
ing teams may be chaired by faculty, deans, or both. Learning teams normally meet less than one year in length
but may continue beyond. The overall goal of learning teams is to create a collaborative environment that includes
faculty in academic direction. Learning teams are not decision making bodies, but make recommendations to the
Academic Deans Council. Learning teams have helped many faculty add their voice to academic afairs.

• Learn the structure and practice of learning teams.
• Understand the conditions that make engagement rich and relevant.
• Discuss the challenges of engaging faculty today.
• Explore team make-up, including faculty, leadership, and college staf.
