Research in Positive Psychology has identifed three pillars of talent development: gratifying experiences, individual
traits and positive institutions. Through completion of the Gallup Strengths Finder, students are able to identify their
Signature Themes, highlighting those areas where they are most likely to develop their greatest talents/strengths
as well as explore those experiences that will be most meaningful and rewarding for them. Staf participation as
Success Coaches allows us to create the optimal positive environment that fosters student talent development and
creates a common language and approach to support students in personal, academic and vocational development.

The attendees will beneft by:
• Increasing knowledge about Positive Psychology and talent development.
• Obtaining strategies to create an institutional environment that supports student and staf talent development.
• Gaining strategies to create a cross-disciplinary approach to student development.
• Attaining strength-based models and resources on student development.
• Acquiring strategies and models to develop Success Coaches.

In today’s VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) environment, leadership development initiatives of all
kinds are coming under increasing fre. Horizontal development, aimed at the acquisition of knowledge, skills and
abilities, critics say, must be augmented by vertical development, aimed at advancing the leader’s capacity for
more complex and conscious ways of thinking, being and acting. As leaders of institutions that play a signifcant
role in preparing leaders for the future, it is imperative that we Respond to the implications of this dramatic shift
both for our own growth as leaders and for the development of our students’ leadership capabilities.

Attendees will beneft by:
• Examining the forces for change in the leadership development feld
• Diferentiating between horizontal and vertical leadership development
• Exploring design criteria for new approaches to vertical leadership development
• Engaging with others in “Practicing Wholeness,” an accessible methodology for collective vertical
development (practices designed to increase self-awareness; strengthen relationships; and, heighten
perspectives)
• Evaluating the potential for integrating “Practicing Wholeness” into professional development activities
and the redesign of leadership/management curriculum in their own institutions
