Most leaders dream of guiding their teams to “a promised land”, a success-flled place marked by missions
accomplished, goals achieved, growth sustained, and outcomes met. Many, however, will inherit the task of leading

teams “through the desert” times of tested commitments, shaken trust, fckle following, and reversion to old beliefs.
Yet, deserts provide open spaces where great inner learning can take place. Crafted around a philosophy of
leadership expressed by the inspirational teacher and writer Henri J.M. Nouwen, this session invites participants to
refect upon and share their own experiences and lessons learned regarding leadership, its trials and
triumphs.

Attendees will:
• Develop or refne an understanding of servant leadership
• Identify or challenge their own perceptions of effective leadership
• Confront the “temptation to be relevant”
• Learn to avoid the “temptation to be spectacular”
• Discover strategies for effective leadership while side-stepping the “temptation to be powerful”

While the anticipated tsunami of baby boomer retirements may be embraced in some academic circles, its impact is
beginning to create tension between employers of educators and service providers in professions that are already in
short supply. These conditions threaten to derail efforts to expand entry-level enrollment to provide essential future
services. Delaying retirements may mitigate such risks if solutions created meet the needs of all parties.
