LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT 2.0:
WHAT’S NEEDED NOW?

Location: Alpine 2

Presented by Presented by: Julie K. Wechsler, Executive Assistant to the President, South Mountain Community
College, Phoenix, AZ

The environment in which we lead is increasingly complex, volatile, and unpredictable. As leaders, we are
experiencing the dissolution of traditional organizational boundaries, changing expectations from new
stakeholders, and new technologies that disrupt familiar work practices. The abilities needed to lead in this
environment are also changing. To produce this new level of leadership, our development efforts must focus on
more than behavioral competencies. We must create agile learners with complex thinking abilities, change
management capacity, a tolerance for ambiguity, and a greater awareness of self and others. In this session,
participants will experience new approaches to leadership development and will share responses to research
questions posed by the Center for Creative Leadership designed to contribute to a new framework for leadership
development. Summaries of responses will be summarized, analyzed and shared with participants.

Participants in this session will:
• Discover the implications of the changing environment for leadership
• Learn the difference between knowing what to do and knowing how and when to do it
• Discover what it means to own your own development and why that’s important
• Experience new approaches to learning and development
• Contribute to a new framework of leadership development The Chair Academy’s 23rd Annual International Leadership Conference
