Community colleges today occupy a critical place socially, economically, and politically in terms of America’s future.
The Chair Academy’s 24th Annual International Leadership Conference
Four national, state, and local pressures to improve community college student performance are articulated with a
specifc focus on learner-centered teaching and outcome assessment to promote student retention and degree or
certifcate completion.

The sense of urgency and capacity building strategies needed by campus leaders to establish and sustain an
institution-wide, learner-centered culture that supports student success are described. The essential role of faculty in
deliberately developing and delivering learner-centered skill diagnosis, instruction, and assessment is discussed.

Attendees will gain from:
• Understanding how institutional culture drives successful practice.
• Identifying the core characteristics of a learner-centered culture.
• Understanding the strategic responsibilities of institutional leaders in establishing and sustaining a learner-
centered culture.
• Understanding the need for ongoing and acknowledged capacity building among faculty to support student
performance outcomes.
• Understanding how student skill diagnosis, learning, and outcome assessment are inextricably linked.
